Arts & Crafts—Twachtman

Arts & Crafts—Twachtman style, American, early 20th century. 4" wide, antique 22K gold leaf over red, hand carved. The designs of the great Boston frame maker Hermann Dudley Murphy (1867-1945) were often influenced by the corner motifs of 18th-century Canaletto shapes and the late 19th-century Venetian "liberty style." This replica uses a sloped panel instead of a flat cassetta profile and has enhanced the work of such American Impressionists as Childe Hassam (1859-1935) and its namesake, John H. Twachtman (1853-1902).
