Hesselius

Hesselius, English, 18th century. 4" wide scoop, dark brown over red wood with warm 22K gold leaf inner carving. This frame design is named after Gustavus Hesselius (1682-1755), the Swedish-born painter, who studied in England and eventually settled in Philadelphia. The Baltimore Museum of Art also used this frame for the work of Gustavus' son, John, who was the first art teacher of Charles Willson Peale.
