Carlo Maratta

Carlo Maratta, Italian, 18th century. 3" wide, warm antique silver gilt over black, hand shaped and hand carved. This design is named after the Italian artist Carlo Maratta (1625-1713). It is also known as the "Salvator Rosa (1615-1673) frame" and was quite popular in the 18th century as the "Roman Gallery frame" when it was used to reframe the papal collection. English and American frame makers also utilized this style in the 18th and 19th centuries.
